Birds are an endangered species, but birdwatchers around the world are on the case in a delightful, charming film about amateur ornithologists.

Flocks of birds are disappearing around the world, while more and more people are turning their gaze to the sky and finding a deeper meaning in birdwatching. ‘Watching People Watching Birds’ shifts the focus from the birds in the lens to the people behind the binoculars. The film follows everyone from world-renowned American author Jonathan Franzen to ornithologists and enthusiastic birdwatchers, all united by their love for these flying, feathered creatures.

Birdwatching becomes more than a hobby. It is a search for something primal. The passion of the birdwatchers is highly contageous and opens our senses to a world we might otherwise not see. With equal parts humour and melancholy, the film paints a portrait of a planet in crisis and the birdwatchers who fight tooth and nail to preserve the population. Jonathan Franzen reminds us that birds may be our last strong connection to nature.
